Easter

For most workers, Easter is a time to look forward to. The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and you get two Bank Holidays so you can enjoy a nice break. For shift workers the situation is somewhat different. While you get your Bank Holidays, as part of your holiday entitlement, for most 24/7 operation, someone still has to be there. So you don’t get the time off when everyone else does. In fact Easter is more stressful. The kids are off school, everyone else is planning activates, but for a shift worker, it is just another day.

Does it have to be this way?

No, Easter is the perfect time to take a holiday. So when you are creating a shift schedule a shift manger should consider what will happen over Easter.

If you are on a Holidays Included Shift Pattern

You can plan an extra long break into the spring. This a great opportunity for shift workers with kids to get extra time off with their kids. For shift worker without kids they get to enjoy a break during the good weather at off peak time, so it’s cheaper. When we get a request to design a holidays included shift pattern, we always discuss the possibility of running the summer shift pattern during the spring as well.

If you are on a Holidays Excluded Shift Pattern

You need to plan your holiday resource around how your shift workers take their holiday. So you can plan in extra resources during the Easter and spring period thus more shift workers can take time off over Easter.
