Forward Planning

We all have to plan our lives around work, but for shift workers things are a little more complicated.

For office workers it’s easy, their shift pattern is known well in advance so they just don’t plan anything on Monday-Friday unless they are taking a holiday. Shift workers don’t have that constraint, so they can plan anything on any day of the week; they just have to plan things a bit better.

For a shift worker, the most important thing is to know when you will be expected to work as far into the future as possible, this means that you can plan as much of your life around the shift pattern as possible. We recommend issuing the next year’s shift pattern from the start of October. This gives everyone plenty of time to plan their lives around the shift pattern.

I have met people who have planned weddings around their shift pattern, and they were so pleased they could. On a holidays included shift pattern with a three week holiday in the summer, they planned their wedding for the first week off and then their honeymoon in the following two weeks.

Having their shift pattern issued well in advance made their lives easier.

From the company’s perspective this works great too because if everyone knows when they are expected at work a year in advance, then they rarely have to bother their mangers with changes.

So a little advance planning means that everyone is happier and has to spend less time manipulating the system.

Also if the shift pattern is issued once a year, then managers only have to work on the shift pattern once each year not twelve time (if they issued it every month). This frees up management time so that they can concentrate on the important issues like strategic planning and improving quality.
