Operational Research

You can always be more efficient

Operational Research is all about using analysis to improve decision making. Dr Angela Moore uses mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, optimisation, sequencing and scheduling techniques to create simple heuristics you can employ to run your operation more efficiently.

How good is your maths?

Can you solve the following problem?

32 staff, 31 days of holiday with 8hours shifts. How much holiday do you have to fit into a year?

Could you cope with three people on holiday cover each day?

What happens if no one takes a holiday in January?

7,936 hours of holiday to fit into a year. On 8hour shifts that’s 992 shifts per year, 19 shifts per week or 2.7 shifts a day.

You could cope with three people on each day but you would need a very good holiday management plan.

With three people on each day to cover for holidays, you have a spare capacity of 824 hours or 103 shifts per year. If no one took a holiday in January your spare capacity is reduced to 10 shifts. That means that on ten days for the rest of the year you could have two people off each day. For the rest of the year you need three people to be off every day.

To find out how to effectively manage your holidays come to our Seminar CDT02: How to manage your holidays and Absence. Discover how to incorporate everybody’s holiday without affecting the operation.
